If you’re trying to plan a trip to New York City, we know how hard it can be to nail the basics, so here’s how we did it! It’s a big city, we went everywhere and of course still didn’t see everything we wanted to. The starting point for us is how to get there, where to stay, and how to get around the city.

Five days and four nights of exploring NYC

We flew into Newark airport with Jet2, a UK based budget airline, who were running special, local airport flights leaving around Thanksgiving. This meant that we were able to depart from East Midlands Airport, which is closest to us and only around 45 minutes away by public transport. Amazing! The flight was very basic, so if you’re not into flying a Ryanair type flight for a long time then maybe give it a miss. It was a fine trip, but next time I might opt for a little more comfort flying for a little more money.

We stayed at The Evelyn, located on E 27th Street, near to Fifth Avenue and Madison. It’s in an amazing location and close to several subway stops, with it also being walking distance to many points of interest. A boutique hotel with small rooms and a mostly broken down elevator, it served us perfectly for our stay and we’d choose this place again, if not for the comfy bed then for the great location.

We purchased 7 day subway tickets for our entire stay, costing $31 each and providing us with unlimited subway rides, these were handy because we could hop on and hop off to head to new destinations as we felt like it. Walking was a big part of our trip too, but having the subway pass made it easier to travel further distances. Calculating the price of a single trip versus the 7 day ticket, if you’re planning to make around 13 trips or more then the 7 day pass is what you want. The subway is easy to ride once you figure out your uptown and downtown, and the local/express trains are easy enough to identify after a few trips – don’t be scared!
