A must try dish, and a local speciality, Khao Soi in Chiang Mai is one thing you cannot miss. It all boils down to noodles and meat in curry broth. It’s topped with a handful of crunchy fried noodles and finished with some greens and a squeeze of lime.

Curry Noodles? We’re sold!

We knew we wanted to try it whilst we were in the city, so we began scouring the internet for the best place to have a taste. Over on Mark Wiens’ blog we found a post about a spot between two temples, on the edge of the Chiang Mai gate. Khao Soi Khun Yai is the place you definitely want to visit!

Following directions from his blog and google, we arrived at around 1pm, hoping to get a seat before they closed at 2pm. It was packed! After a short wait we managed to squeeze onto a table and place or order for two bowls. Our dining companion was a nutty Lithuanian lady who kept no thought to herself. It was…fun. Totally worth it to eat delicious noodles, though!

What should I order?

The Khao Soi can be ordered with pork, chicken, or beef. We went for chicken, which cost 35 Baht. What a bargain! There are drinks on the menu too, which are also reasonable. We ate Khao Soi in Chiang Mai in a couple of other places too – a more touristy restaurant, and another roadside place, but found this to be our favourite.

Khao Soi Khun Yai, is located on the edge of the old city, between two temples on Chang Phueak gate. Check it out!
